Transportation is provided for those who do not want to walk that distance. Lee Epting Events from Athens, GA provides a southern buffet lunch and the roasted pig and sauce is prepared by Ossabaw's own Roger Parker.
Through the year artists come to Ossabaw to be inspired and work. As a thank you for working on Ossabaw many donate a completed work of art for the silent auction held at the Pig Roast. Friendly competition is a part of the silent auction, as guests want to take home an Ossabaw inspired work of art.
Part of the adventure is the journey, please come and enjoy the day.
A GOOSE AND THREE HORSES
By Eleanor “Sandy” West, 97, Resident of Ossabaw Island
My home is on a strip of land, that I still own, on Ossabaw Island. I am very, very lucky to live on this wilderness island where people are fenced in and the land belongs to the animals that can come and go as they please. I love gazing out my window and watching the many wild or rescued animals in my yard.
Some years ago I was given a flock of ten peafowl by a dear friend. Around the same time I also provided a home to twelve geese that were abandoned on a small pond when their owners moved away. From the time I adopted them, these birds lived near my barn. They followed me everywhere and ate bread and crackers from my hand. All of my rescued animals were fast friends. Especially my three horses; Phoenix, Cela and Poco, and a dear goose named Christmas.
One night about eight or nine years ago, all my beloved geese and peafowl disappeared except for one peahen and dear Christmas. There was no sign of struggle and not one feather was found. Of course we searched everywhere, but the mystery was never solved. I was devastated. Then Christmas disappeared four days later it was almost more than I could bear. Only a peahen remained. She is now twenty three years old.
Three years ago something happened that nearly scared the daylights out of me! I was sitting on my swing, reading a book when I was startled by a rude ear-splitting honk. I looked around and there, without question, was Christmas – fit, strong and apparently unchanged after all these years. He hopped right up to me and took a cracker from my hand, as he always had. It didn’t take him long to find his old friends, my three horses. He always loved following them around and it was a delight to see them all reunited.
I do not know if you are familiar with animal communicators, but I have a good long time friend who is one. I often wonder why so many humans miss so much by not believing in the unbelievable. I called my friend, the animal communicator, who loves Christmas and has communicated with him often. People always ask me, “Why does Christmas always follow the horses everywhere?”
She said Christmas communicated to her the following explanation;
“I like to watch their butts. Theirs go up and down and mine goes side to side.”
