Price: From $450.00 to $700.00

Product Options

Room Type:

Overview:: Spend three days making art on Ossabaw Island--Georgia's first Heritage Preserve. Bring your own materials to paint, sketch, write, compose music, or shoot photos on this unspoiled barrier island on Georgia's coast.  For an added fee, take an optional eight-hour tintype photography workshop taught by artist Addison Brown.

An Ossabaw Island visit includes excellent art-making inspiration: lush maritime forests and marsh wetlands, 19th- and 20th-century historic buildings, and possible sightings of a variety of wildlife including wading birds and feral hogs, as well as free-roaming domesticated donkeys, and perhaps an alligator. Take short hikes on forest and marsh-side trails or ride to the beach in the back of a pick-up truck.

Trip activities:: Arrive on Ossabaw Island on Wednesday in time for social hour (BYOB) and 5pm planning meeting, followed by dinner.  An overview of Ossabaw Island history and fine tuning the retreat agenda will be part of this gathering.  Possible after-dinner activities include time around the outdoor fire pit.

On Thursday morning, enjoy an early breakfast and then spend the day on your own project at several locations around the island, OR take the all-day tintype workshop at the North End Field Lab (described below).

Possible locations for making your own art include South Beach, Middle Place, causeways, and other scenic areas.  Eating your sack lunch will be part of the day's activities while out roaming the island. Transportation is via pick up truck. Note that the Torrey-West Estate is NOT part of this trip.

You'll return to the North End in time for dinner and a relaxing evening on the porch, or head out to find other art-making inspiration.

Friday morning, sleep in a bit or rise early to wander around the North End on your own. Enjoy breakfast before packing up for the trip home (first boat departs at 11am).

Optional Tintype Workshop on Thursday:
Led by artist Addison Brown.  Held on the North End, this one-day historic photography workshop is suitable for novices or experienced artists. A tintype is a photograph made by creating a direct positive image on a thin sheet of metal (aluminum for this workshop) coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s; documenting the Civil War, scenes from the Wild West, and  booths at fairs, carnivals, and urban sidewalk photographers.
The full-day workshop consists of a chemical safety briefing, use of a large format field camera, the process of pouring, sensitizing, developing, fixing a plate and preserving the plate. All equipment and supplies are provided.  Brown teaches the workshop outdoors and in the on-site dark room at Ossabaw’s Field Lab.  Minimum four students, maximum eight students.
Tintype workshop fee $125:
Fees include instruction by Addison Brown, equipment use and materials, darkroom use and ownership of final work.
