2011 Pig Roast & Art Auction, Saturday October 15th

The 2011 Pig Roast will be on Saturday, October 15.

Welcome to the 10th annual Ossabaw Island Pig Roast, Picnic and Art Sale, the only fund raising event hosted by the Ossabaw Island Foundation. This fall event is hosted in Mrs. West's front yard overlooking Ossabaw Sound. Guests leave from Skidaway Island on pontoon boats provided Mike Neal's Bull River Cruises to the North End dock of Ossabaw. Most people choose to walk the mile road to the Torrey-West Estate. Transportation is provided for those who do not want to walk that distance.

Lee Epting Events from Athens, GA provides a southern buffet lunch and the roasted pig and sauce is prepared by Ossabaw's own Roger Parker.

Through the year artists come to Ossabaw to be inspired and work. As a thank you for working on Ossabaw many donate a completed work of art for the silent auction held at the Pig Roast. Friendly competition is a part of the silent auction, as guests want to take home an Ossabaw inspired work of art.

Part of the adventure is the journey, please come and enjoy the day.  The tenth Pig Roast is held in memory of Jim Bitler's eight years of dedicated service to the Ossabaw Island Foundation.

Mrs. West's story of Paul Mitchell

One bright, crisp and heavenly morning I walked down the long back hall of my beautiful old house  and started down steps to the road. At the bottom of the steps was a ruffley black puddle.  As I watched, the black puddle      unfolded and became  a small black piglet  who in time became  Paul Mitchell.  He was named for the famous hair dresser who was badly needed
by Paul.

Just like our beloved Lucky Pig ,  Paul grew up in the house and accompanied me on every adventure.

You know animals will grow up to be what THE ANIMALS  are supposed to be if humans will let them.  I never  tried to make Paul what I thought pigs should be.   He is definately a pig that is himself.

He dearly loves a man that works on the island called Richard.  When Richard comes in the morning Paul follows his truck a mile up to my house.  They immediately go under my window and Paul gives Richard's pocket a healthy snout  whack.   Richard then takes his cell phone out of his pocket and  sticks it under Paul's nose.   Paul snorts and growls and chats until Richard removes the phone.    Upstairs, on my cell phone  I hear the operator say “Message finished.  It will be saved for twenty-one days”.

Paul scares the shirts off of strangers.  He is so glad to see someone new on the scene that he crashes out of the woods and runs at them.   He really just wants to be kissed.

Paul now has the most beautiful sculpture made of him by our famous artist, Judy Mooney.  I hear that it  is  being  made of bronze!!!!!!!!

The last story about Paul is my favorite!!!!!!!     A young lady has  recently been living on the island.  She came  quite  a while ago straight from Alaska  with the most  marvelous huge Alaskan dog named Sarah Palin!.

One day a total stranger appeared ,walked up to the Club House where our blessed Jim Bitler was sweeping off the porch.

The stranger said  “Oh Sir     I've been told that Paul Mitchell and Sarah Palin are here on the island!!!!!!”

Jim never looked up from his sweeping and said over his shoulder  “Yeah they are together most of the time.  Just now they are  out  playing  in the marsh.”
