Saturday March 26, 2011 Gullah Geechee Day Trip to Ossabaw
Spring Day Trip Tells the Story of Ossabaw’s Gullah Geechee Culture
What: Gullah Geechee Day Trip to Ossabaw
When: Saturday, March 26, 2011
9:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (return time approximate)
Where: Ossabaw Island
Experience Ossabaw Island in the spring while learning the stories of Ossabaw’s Gullah-Geechee people, from the early 19th century through the mid-20th century. Learn about the African roots of the enslaved and freedmen families who lived on Ossabaw Island. Visit the three restored tabby cabins built in the 1820’s – 1840’s. Hear about the island’s African American community leaders before and after emancipation. Discover their daily lives—foodways, work experiences, family life. Learn the story of the community’s move to the mainland, establishing the Pin Point community in the early 20th century.
Guest tour leader is Dr. Deborah Mack, a nationally acclaimed anthropologist, expert on African American history and museum studies, and co-chair of the Ossabaw Island Foundation’s project team to interpret Ossabaw Island’s African American/Gullah Geechee story. Dr. Mack will co-lead the day trip along with Jim Bitler, On Island Coordinator for The Ossabaw Island Foundation.
