Maria Bosomworth and William Rodgers

Introduction: From the deep woods of Ossabaw Island came a very special piglet and from the family of the author came a very special puppy. This is the true story of their love and friendship written and photographed by Eleanor Torrey West.

The piglet, Maria Bosomworth, was named after the Creek Indian princess Coosaponakakeesa, or, in English, Mary. Mary married an Englishman, the Reverend Thomas Bosomworth. Mary Bosomworth’s history was closely intertwined with that of Ossabaw.

On a visit to Ossabaw Island, William Rodgers, a writer and friend of the author, saved the life of a puppy. The puppy was named for him.

Maria Bosomworth and William Rodgers was first published in 1976. This second printing is made possible by the generosity of the Mills B. Lane memorial Foundation. Maria Bosomworth and William Rodgers won an award of excellence in the 1976 Southern Book Competition sponsored by the Southeastern Library Association.

From letters Received by the Author:

"A lovely, warm, touching tale of a need in all us all. I enjoyed it and will read it again and again."

"I loved the animal pictures and the warmth and love."

It’s and dear and tender story and everyone who reads it cries a little."

"A wonderful book-such things are the joy of life."

"The theme bearing on the People Who Stop and the people Who Go By is a simplistic wonder."

All the profits from the sale of the book will go to The Ossabaw Island Foundation, which is dedicated to education, research, and the preservation of this wild land and its animals.
