1. Saturday, June 3, 2017 Creative Day Trip to Ossabaw

Spend the whole day on Ossabaw making art, music, prose or poetry on your own. Bring your own supplies and creativity and be inspired by the muse of Ossabaw Island.

Or, participate in one or both of our optional educational offerings: a 30-minute interpretive history tour and/or cell-phone/Instagram photography workshop, designed for any level of experience, to improve your cell phone photography skills and create or enhance your Instagram presence.

Travel by pontoon boat across Ossabaw Sound to the island's North End. Our boat captain will be Mike Neal of Bull River Cruises. After a short orientation to the island and its history, you’ll have the rest of the day to wander the North End on your own to inspire you: along the marsh, on the dock, on the porch of the Club House, near the tabby cabins, or some hidden place known only to you. Weather and tides permitting, this trip will include a boat trip down Bradley Creek, which bisects the northeastern tip of the island.

Sponsored by: The Ossabaw Island Foundation

This  trip is limited to 35 people.

An Ossabaw Island visit includes excellent art-making inspiration: possible sightings of a variety of wildlife including migratory birds, wading birds, and feral hogs, as well as free-roaming domesticated donkeys, and perhaps an alligator. Take short hikes to Cane Patch Island (site of a large native American shell midden), and on forest and marshside trails.

Our guest photography instructor is Stephen Morton.  Morton is an acclaimed photographer / photojournalist based in Savannah. His photographs capture the moments of news and events throughout the region along with the lifestyles of Southern culture. His regular editorial clients include The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press, Bloomberg Financial News, Getty Images, and USA Today. Mr. Morton's work has been published around the world in Newsweek, Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, International News, Stern Magazine, and Spin Magazine.

Morton’s phone camera/Instagram workshop will address photo composition using Instagram’s square format, lighting, filters, switching from color to black & white, and several Instragram tools.

The optional  interpretive history  tour offers  a 30-minute overview of the history of Ossabaw Island, Georgia's third largest barrier island, from the native Americans through the 20th century ownership by the Torrey family and their sale of Ossabaw to the State of Georgia as a Heritage Preserve. Tour three 1840s era restored tabby cabins built as housing by enslaved Africans and learn about the tabby-making process. Hear about Ossabaw's indigo cultivation and see naturalized indigo unique to this island.

(Eleanor "Sandy" Torrey West will not be present, and the Torrey-West home is not included in this trip.)
